Boomers get a bad rap - themorningcall.com: Health Blog

Baby Boomers don't always get a fair shake, often being portrayed as indulgent and selfish. But a new MetLife study explodes that stereotype.

The study , "The MetLife Study of Caregiving Costs to Working Caregivers: Double Jeopardy for Baby Boomers Caring for Their Parents," shows that the proportion of adults providing care or financial assistance to their elderly parents has tripled in the past 15 years to about a quarter of all the adult children in the United States. The aggregate lost wages, pension income and Social Security benefits to these caregivers is an astounding $3 trillion, it says.

"Nearly 10 million adult children over the age of 50 care for their aging parents," said director of the MetLife Mature Market Institute, Sandra Timmermann, in a statement to Healthcare Finance News. "Assessing the long-term financial impact of caregiving for aging parents on caregivers themselves, especially those who must curtail their working careers to do so, is especially important, since it can jeopardize their future financial security."

The study found that women more often provide the physical care for aged parents, while men provide financial help.

Additionally, the study of adult children 50 and older found that those who care for elderly parents are more likely to report that their own health is "fair" or "poor" than those who do not have responsibility for their parents.

According to the report in Heatlhcare Finance News, the MetLife study notes that employers can offer their employees who are caring for aging parents options such as flex time and family leave and retirement planning and stress management resources.
