Viewing the activity in the transfer market, I have to say I admire the way Manchester United, under the leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson, has smartly gone about things.

For a club whose supporters constantly harp on about the Glazers being bad for them, they`ve not done too badly I`d say.

Contrast that with how we`re going about things and we appear to be going about things in the exact opposite manner. Almost four weeks after the services of Carlo Ancelotti were dispensed with; we`ve seen no incoming movements but have witnessed several promising youngsters leave.

But as the season approaches, we `re also seeing Liverpool put in a culture of talent and it` s even talk of Arsenal splashed a bit of money as Arsene Wenger tries to appease those who now appear to criticize the way the club has once again ended without a trophy.

Of course, I recognize that our situation isn `t helped by the fact that we are now adrift and much attention is focused on finding a successor to Ancelotti. But again we can say that `s all self-inflicted, after all, some ask the question why a manager has been double-winner sent so quickly?

But yesterday, with Ron Gourlay remarking the squad will be as it was last season with just a couple of new signings, had me pondering.

I couldn`t help dwelling on the days when Chelsea were renowned as sharp-operators in the transfer market, of the times when Ken Bates ruled the roost and Colin Hutchison was the man pulling off what we, at the time, perceived to be miracles, recruiting such illustrious names as Gullit and Desailly to name but two.
