Port Hope drive-through gets Ontario Municipal Board nod

PORT HOPE -- A Port Hope business owner says he'll wait until all the paperwork is in place before forging ahead with plans for a drive-through at his convenience store. On April 29, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) dismissed two appeals by Port Hope residents Murray and Carol Bolton, who opposed zoning changes to allow a drive-through window at the Daisy Mart convenience store, owned by Port Hope resident Jason Chin. The OMB decision now paves the way for Mr. Chin to reapply for a municipal building permit to install the window at his store, located at the corner of Ontario and Oxford streets. According to the OMB written decision dated May 11, the Boltons, who live south of the convenience store, based their appeals on concerns about the environmental and health effects of cars idling in the drive-through and its queue. The OMB decision noted health authorities contacted by the municipality expressed no objections to the proposal. Mr. Chin said he submitted his original application to the municipality in March 2010. Council approved the zoning change application in October of that year. However, during the proposal's OMB-mandated 21-day appeal process, the Boltons appealed the decision, which again held up the project, he said. "I'm waiting for the official papers (from the OMB) before I reapply for a building permit and hire a contractor," said Mr. Chin. The work is not a big job, the convenience store owner said. His original contractor estimated the window installation should take a couple of days. The proposed drive-through is for convenience retail purposes only, and Mr. Chin added he has no intention of selling coffee or food, in keeping with the municipal bylaw. The OMB decision also noted arrangements for a privacy fence and landscaping are already included in previous plans submitted and approved by the municipality.

I was dropping off some books at my local used bookstore (that I adore!) and the owner mentioned to me that she is having a blowout sale the week of July 1st (for Canada Day). All items are $1 and I'm happy to pick up any books anyone here would like. Today I got: the complaints and the forbidden game and I saw so many others that I would like to have! I've stopped listing books on my profile - just going to angel now and use up the points I've accumulated but this sale is just too good not to share!

(for those of you who are in my area, the bookstore is Gryffin Books on John St in Port Hope. Definitely worth checking out if you can. Even at "full" price, she charges barely anything for really nice books. I don't know how she makes a profit!)

Yes, it *IS* Port Hope, Ontario! Guess I should have mentioned that little detail (what do you mean, you can't read my mind?). I will print out your wishlist and take it with me... the entire town has a Canada Day celebration so we're going to walk the street. I've loved living here the past two months! (That sale in St Catharines sounds enticing but I think my husband would say that it's too far to drive!)

Elizabeth Elizabeth, if for some reason you have a copy of Alistair MacLeod "To every thing there is a Season: A Cape Breton Christmas Story," I love you beyond words if you want to take it for me! I continue the hunt, and I do not want to buy a copy of it, (my only option is used anyway), but it's the only one of his books that I have not read and I do not have .
