Baseball Playoffs | Titans Aim For 5A Baseball Playoffs
AREA – Not Nederland’s Trevin Sonnier Nor Port Neches-Groves’ Austin Stone, but Port Arthur Memorial’s Rony Sanchez may be the best shortstop in the Golden Triangle, if not all of Southeast Texas.
And most probably have never heard of this Rony Sanchez, or that he has been District 21-5A’s first-team all-district shortstop his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons thanks to a near perfect fielding percentage and a career batting average that stands at .412.
He hits from both sides of the plate and has also given Memorial manager Wayne McKeller a very reliable pitching arm over the years with a 1.93 career earned-run-average.
McKeller is sure convinced Sanchez is a top-tier Division I shortstop. The Titans boss is also confident that Memorial baseball just may have the right blend of players to claim a playoff spot this season because of Sanchez and the strong supporting cast around him, which includes fellow three-year starter Jaylen Lott and two-year starters Andrew Jenkins, Craig Veazie, Jesus Gutierrez and Christian Sanchez.
"We have some great talent here right now. We have six children with great academic experience and given some breaks, I think we are very capable of competing for a playoff spot, "said McKeller, including Titans opened the 2011 campaign with a 13-1 victory on eruption Central Jaguars on Monday night.
Sanchez and Veazie, a career .273 hitter, went 2 for 3 two in the win.
After a hot start in 2010, Memorial finished with only eight victories and was cleared in the league. But baseball is probably the best sport in the District 21-5A all, especially with the entry of LaPorte Bulldogs, who distribute regular players in the best schools in Texas.
"We know it will not be easy, but I think this group can do," said McKeller the chances of his team to a postseason berth. "Laporte is a very good baseball program, Channelview best sport is probably baseball, Sterling and West Brook teams are always strong in the playoffs, this district is very competitive. We generally do not have the pitching to compete but we have some very strong weapons this year. "
McKeller said he has four pitchers who can throw low to mid-80 Rony Sanchez, Veazie, Jenkins, and Lott, a second-team all-district first baseman last year. Jenkins was the winning pitcher against the plant, which was limited to two shots.
