Children can't manage disease without help

NICI Cairney is one of more than 5500 children with type 1 diabetes anxiously waiting to hear Minister Jenny Macklin’s decision on the future of their carer allowances.

The review of the controversial decision to cut carer allowances for children once they turn 10 finishes this Friday.

Parents involved in the Leader’s Save Our Children campaign have made a final heartfelt plea to the Families and Community Services Minister to raise the age of automatic eligibility.

Cranbourne’s Jodie Cairney, Nici’s mother, said she hoped the minister realised a 10-year-old child could not manage the disease alone.

“If a child was to make an error with their treatment they can end up hospitalised, in a diabetic coma or at worst lose their life,” she said.

“And without the allowance to help with the expenses that we incur to keep our Nici alive, our family will be put under even further financial strain.”

Carrum Down’s mum Fiona Sampson, who has never received the allowance as her daughter Brianna was diagnosed at 12-years-old, said she desperately needed the policy to change. “I struggle every single day to keep my eldest daughter with type 1 alive and care for my other daughter, along with holding down a job and keeping a roof over their head in an already difficult situation as a single parent,” Ms Sampson said. “I need help.”

Liberal senator Mitch Fifield raised the issue with officials from the Department of Families and Community Services at the Senate Estimates hearings last week. “I took up the issue as a result of the Leader campaign, which revealed the worry and distress of parents,” he said.

Families can submit views to the review at cadiabetesreview@fahcsia.gov.
