Sir Alex Ferguson – The Unthinkable
It seems quite likely that I write what I look at Barcelona to Real Madrid in the second stage of the Spanish Supercup.
I am 28 and I can not remember life at Manchester United BF (before Fergie). The same goes for millions of United fans when you look at clubs like Chelsea / Man City who have had more managers than I care to remember, the closest to the permanence of Sir Alex 'in the Arsene Wenger Premier League has been at Arsenal since 1996. David Moyes is the closest of the two with a reign of ten years today.
I thought about life at Manchester United, Sir Alex after retirement and it fills me with terror, we have had this horrible thought before, when May 8, 2000, he announced that his contract was up in 2002, that he would resign as manager and move to a stage role, I remember seeing the title on Ceefax (remember that?) and feeling sick to the stomach and heart broken, just think Fergie disappeared when he said he would, we would have Sven as a manager, don 't bear the thought does this?
I hope that Sir Alex would change his mind increased when United announced that they were in discussions with him to stay on as manager beyond 2002 and then the news came at the end of February when the delight of United fans and players (even though Dwight Yorke did not think so, he and Fergie have fallen and he was looking forward to a new system!) that Fergie has signed a new three are for the year and all was good in the world again!
Which brings us to today, Sir Alex was the United manager since 1986 and is approaching a massive 25 years at Old Trafford.It approaches its 70th anniversary and shows no sign of stopping. He clearly still has a thirst, hunger and desire, but it's just a matter of time before he resigned and I think we see signs of construction for life after Fergie.
The signatures of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Chicharito over the last 12 months and the young players we have in the team and the likes of Pogba, Morrison is discharged to the breakthrough over the next two seasons and we are bedding in these players so that when the day comes that Sir Alex retires, the next man in charge a large majority of his team-made.
People ask just why Sir Alex so special and why has there been such a success? For me personally, it's things like the way he handles the media, rarely is a player Sir Alex criticize in public, is always kept behind closed doors is the way it should be, unlike managers as Harry Redknapp, who flatters the media at every opportunity, whether a transfer deadline day interview or a call to Talksport on a Saturday afternoon, which is why the media give us so much trouble in the press.
