The Note: Battle Of Waterloo: Perry Plays On Bachmann's Home Turf

DES MOINES, Iowa -- He came, he saw, he shook a whole lot of hands.

Less than 24 hours after making his presidential ambitions official, Texas Gov. Rick Perry swept into Iowa on Sunday for his debut visit to this early-nominating state where his folksy manner and retail politicking skills were on full display.

Greeting Perry were several hundred Iowa Republicans who turned out to hear him and his rivals, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum, speak at a county GOP dinner in Waterloo, Iowa.

“Welcome to Iowa,” Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley said in a brief conversation with the Texas governor as audience members and the press swarmed around the pair. “You’ve been here several times.”

 “Trust me,” Perry replied. “I’ll be here often."

That Perry chose to kick off his competition for the state of Iowa in Bachmann’s hometown of Waterloo was telling. That many in the room seemed to respond more favorably to his style of campaigning than to Bachmann’s just one day after her victory in the Ames Straw Poll has even more important implications for the long road to the Caucuses next year.

In his remarks to the audience at last night’s Black Hawk County Lincoln Day Dinner -- an event held at a ballroom that doubles as a bingo hall and featured an Abraham Lincoln impersonator -- Perry acknowledged that “it takes me a while to get into something,” but “when I’m in, I’m in all the way.”

And few of the Iowans in the room seemed to mind that Perry’s presidential announcement in South Carolina threatened to upstage Saturday’s straw poll in their state. John R. Brownell told ABC News’ Katie Bosland that he wrote-in Perry’s name on the ballot in Ames, helping him to a sixth place finish, surpassing GOP front-runner Mitt Romney by more than 150 votes.

Brownell said he was debating between Perry and Romney, but voted for the Texas governor because, he said, he has “a little stronger tradition of a limited government approach...and what I would say a conservative approach to government.”

Bachmann had a base of support in the room too, and even though she touted her Waterloo roots and handed out an entire apple pie to 100-year-old woman (she offered it to the oldest Republican mother in the room), Perry clearly stole some of her local appeal.
