Stolen muscle car police seized revs up lawsuit against DeLand

DELAND -- Three years after his red 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Super Sport was snatched from a parking lot in Georgia, Edward Borman still wasn't over it.

The Dunedin classic car collector stopped driving his vintage cars to work and got ready to sell his other Chevelle, a '69.

Then, cruising down the Internet highway a few months ago, he spotted what he believes is his long-lost vintage muscle car, featured in a DeLand-based Craigslist ad.

But now no one's getting kicks from this SS 396, and the city of DeLand is facing a lawsuit.

The suit, filed by a DeLand man, seeks to determine ownership of the car. Police say there's a possibility it may need to be dismantled so investigators can see the car's vehicle identification number.

Considered Chevrolet's first muscle car model, the 1967 Chevelle SS sold for between $2,200 and $3,000, according to the GM Heritage center.

Today, the two guys who want the custom-built car back say its worth about $50,000.

Borman, owner of four performance parts shops in Florida, said it's like no other. He has been restoring cars since he was 16 and customized it with his son, who was 16 years old at the time and would have inherited it.

Borman wants it back. And so does DeLand resident Edward Moore.

According to a lawsuit, Moore is suing the city of DeLand, Philadelphia Insurance Cos. and Troy Henderson Bostick, a Jacksonville man that traded cars with him.

It's a complaint intended to have the court decide who gets the Chevelle, said City Attorney Darren Elkind. The city has reason to believe it's a stolen car and needs to be released to the right person, but finding out whom that is won't be easy.

Police officers said Borman, who already settled with Philadelphia Insurance, identified components on the car that only an owner would know -- such as the custom clock on the dashboard. He also knew how to fix the Chevelle's air springs.

Details like that were enough for officers to seize the Chevy back in March and it's been sitting at a secure impound ever since.

It's an unusual case for the Police Department, said Lt. Pete Moon. Most factory-made modern stolen vehicles can be verified through vehicle identification numbers and factory features.

But this Chevelle's VIN plate appears to have been replaced, Moon said.

Viewing a VIN on the classic car's frame would require removing the body, some car enthusiasts say.
