MY VIEW: Knocking the sense out of a storm
There was a low rumble in the distance that seemed to go on forever.
“Hungry?” I thought looking down at my stomach.
My stomach just shrugged as if to say, “wasn’t me.”
A storm was brewing outside.
Undaunted, I took up my usual post lying across the couch with one leg on the back and one leg on the floor, remote in hand. There was a steady stream of flatulence, which “came from the cat.”
My wife and I were watching the epic WWII miniseries “Band of Brothers.” The thunder outside matched the constant gun fire and explosions on the TV. It made it all seem surreal — the ultimate surround sound. Even the scene where the soldiers were walking through the rain seemed somehow more real than ever before; like I could feel the rain.
“It’s like you can feel the rain!” I yelled to Stefanie, who was sitting across from me.
“What?!” She replied.
“The rain!” I said. “It seems so real!”
“What?!” She replied.
“The rain!” I said shaking my head. “Oh, forget it!”
She paused the TV, and questioned me again. But now it had been too drawn out, a minor comment had stopped everything.
Peevishly and quickly I said, “the rain, you can almost feel the rain. It seems almost real.”
She nodded at me like you would a dog that just successfully used the backyard as a bathroom instead of the bed.
For a moment, she just stared at me, and I at her. Then we both heard it at the same time. Tap ... tap ... tap. Together our eyes went to a spot on the wide TV stand. And in perfect sync our eyes scanned up to the ceiling where the plaster was bubbling. Tap ... tap ... tap.
Springing into action, my leg swung down from the top of the couch to the floor in a flash. I landed with the grace of a cat. Then I tripped over a shoe. I grabbed a big green bucket, which is usually home to the winter hats, scarfs, gloves, a bike pump and a miniature baseball bat from the Dayton Dragons baseball team. I dumped it all on the floor.
As the rain got heavier outside, the taps got tappier.
The corner of the ceiling was swelling into two heaving bosoms of rain. They dripped water on the TV stand, and directly on the plug stuck in the wall. As I went to unplug it, Stef armed herself with a folding chair to save my life in case of electrocution.

Then that song from “Benny Hill” started to play from out of nowhere. Eventually the storm passed. We knew there had to be flooding around the area and downed trees everywhere. I went to go online, but the storm brought down the phone lines outside.
