What's a Guy to Do if His Wife Cheats on Him? Head to the Mall
"Crazy, Stupid, Love" is, on balance, remarkably healthy and reasonably intelligent. Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the film, packed with attractive stars, is a smooth blend of genres with a modern comic undercurrent of dark wonder, emotion difficult. Essentially a study in the varieties of male sexual confusion, he traveled the circuit from bromance a kind of Y chromosome weep that could be called men-odrama, with a detour into the bramble bush of teenage awkwardness.
Steve Carell, who, on the big screen mimics often sweet, guys anxious conscientiously taking their inner Michael Scott firmly in check, plays Cal Weaver, an Everyman with a family, a nice suburban home and an office job. He also has a bad haircut and a sense of how terrible, as will be described by Jacob (Ryan Gosling), a pickup artist who offers his services as a coach in the game of seduction.
Cal accepts the offer because his wife of more than two decades, Emily (Julianne Moore), said she wants a divorce, and she cheated with a colleague (Kevin Bacon), only slightly less than the nebbishy Cal himself. Nursing's self-pity in the stylish bar local Cal meets Jacob, who is trying to do for him something like what Will Smith did to Kevin James in "Hitch." (The analogy is proposed film Jacob M. Miyagi in "The Karate Kid.") In a determined half a pathetic attempt to even the score with Emily, Cal exposed to score with as many women as he can .
Complications, as the saying goes, follow, but they are not necessarily those you might expect. The script (by Dan Fogelman, whose other credits include "Bolt" and "Cars") follows what appears to be tangential discussion of the plot. In the end spun together in a chaotic climax that manages to be surprising without destroying the hard won credibility of the film. (The unnecessary tying loose ends which occupies the last 20 minutes or so did some damage, I fear.) "Crazy, Stupid, Love" takes its time, understand the digression may be more important and more satisfying than implacable momentum. The film also prefer small and light improbable incongruities key to big, strong, naughty jokes.
And so we spend time with Cal and son of Emily, Robbie (Jonah Bobo), who has a crush on his baby-sitter, Jessica (Analeigh Tipton), who has a crush on Cal. We also met Hannah, a recent law school graduate with the misfortune of having a useless boyfriend (Josh Groban) and the brilliant good fortune to be played by Emma Stone.A meeting at the beginning of the fall hint that Hannah and Jacob will end up together, but we're not sure how, or how this cross connection with Jacob mentor-protégé friendship with Cal.
