Recent Lakeland Restaurants and Bar Boast Mediterranean Fare

At the epicenter of this cultural transformation is Mustafa Paca, whose new restaurant bears the name of a body of water — the Bosphorus — in his homeland of Turkey.

The restaurant shares a name with a Winter Park eatery, where he worked as head chef for several years before leaving in early 2010, but the two restaurants are not otherwise related.

In February, Paca, with partner Niko Onur Berber, opened Istanbul, a sliver of a cafe on the southeast corner of South Kentucky Avenue and East Lemon Street.

After several months of operation, the two men had a falling out, driving Paca in recent weeks to open Bosphorus Turkish Kitchen directly across the street from Istanbul.

For a while, it looked like a case of dueling restaurants, Turk against Turk. The competitors were even overheard hurling insults at each other from their respective stations.

It appears, however, that Istanbul has closed its doors. The business phone will not accept messages and Berber did not return messages to comment for this story.

Paca said Istanbul's new cook, a fellow Turk from New York, got tired of waiting for a paycheck, so he quit. It remains unclear whether Istanbul will live to serve another kebab. Its website, www.istanbulauthentic.com , has been taken down.

That still leaves Bosphorus, the nearby Hookah Palace and Cafe Zuppina on South Florida Avenue, owned by Berna Nar, who cooks up the recipes of her Turkish homeland.

The melange of ethnic restaurants and bar gives Lakeland a sense of cache enjoyed by larger urban centers, said Julie Townsend, executive director of the Downtown Lakeland Partnership, a marketing agency that promotes local merchants.

"I would really like to see downtown be a mecca for ethnic food," she said. "That's what (our slogan) ‘Downtown Cool' is, not chain restaurants, but interesting places."

It doesn't get much more interesting than the Hookah Palace.

Owner Soloman Wassef of Egypt has created a cozy den of otherworldly sights and sounds, a Middle Eastern carpet ride of mango martinis, watermelon-spiked tobacco and Moroccan-garbed women swirling in shimmering in the dim light of his lounge.

Wassef, who spent 20 years as a general manager and restaurant opener for the Darden restaurant chain, said it took five years of butting heads with city officials to open the Hookah Palace.

"I think I opened the door of opportunity for other business men and women," he said. "I thought I would bring Lakeland something unique. Everything you see is imported from Turkey and Egypt.
