Betty Ford's body arrives at Michigan airport

A motorcade and hearse bearing the body of former First Lady Betty Ford have left a Michigan airport named after her late husband.

A plane carrying Betty Ford's body landed about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Kent County's Cascade Township near Grand Rapids.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder and Michigan first lady Sue Snyder are to attend a memorial service Wednesday evening at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids.

The public can attend a viewing at the museum and pay their respects starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

A national tribute service is set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Episcopal Church.

Betty Ford's body will be interred late Thursday at the museum along with her husband.

GRAND RAPIDS () - The Gerald R. Ford International Airport will be getting two new passenger security screening lanes. The Kent County Aeronautics Board approved the expansion plans Wednesday to add another lane in each of the two concourses.

Grand Rapids — Former first lady Betty Ford will be memorialized this week in her native Michigan as her casket travels to be laid to rest alongside her husband in Grand Rapids.

Ford died Friday in Rancho Mirage, Calif., the desert golf community where she settled with former President Gerald Ford after he left office more than three decades ago. She was 93.

Wednesday morning, Ford's casket will travel to Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, where she grew up and where she met her husband of 58 years. A service for family and friends is scheduled for Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, to be followed by a public visitation.

Lynne Cheney, wife of former Vice President Dick Cheney, and history scholar Richard Norton Smith will give eulogies at the Michigan service. Thursday morning, her casket will travel by motorcade to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum for a private burial.A tribute service for friends and family will be Tuesday at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, Calif.

Man killed in crash called cautious driver

Harper Woods — The owner of a trucking company said an Ontario man who died when his semi was forced up an embankment on Interstate 94 and into the wall of a Kroger supermarket was a cautious driver.

"He was a very careful driver," said Hardeep Mann, owner of Canadian truck company Indocan Logistics Inc. "I've never seen him speeding."

The driver, who was not indentified by police and whom Mann declined to name, lived in Brampton, Ontario, Mann said.

State Police said the tractor-trailer was struck Saturday. Witnesses said they saw two cars racing around the truck before the crash.

Killer of seven used stolen gun, police say

Grand Rapids — Grand Rapids police said an ex-con whose criminal past barred him from owning firearms used a stolen .40-caliber handgun to kill seven people and wound two others before taking his own life.

Police Capt. Jeffrey Hertel said investigators are trying to figure out what motivated Rodrick Dantzler, 34, to kill two ex-girlfriends, his 12-year-old daughter and four other people Thursday. Hertel said the gun was stolen from a home in western Michigan's Kent County.
