How to train your camel: Abilene roofer has a 3000-pound friend

Initial reactions to animal Edwin Snell, Caesar, are all pretty much the same.

Double takes. Abandon jaws. Clashes.

"I saw a lot of wrecks," Snell said, laughing. "The person driving in front will slow down to look at, and then lead the person directly behind them."

In a city like Abilene, Caesar can not help being the center of attention wherever he goes. A 9 meter high, 3000 pounds, two humps of a camel is a natural celebrity.

For his part, 14, Caesar takes care of all the attention with admirable calm.Camels have a reputation for aggressiveness and general nastiness, but 12 years of living under the care of the leg Snell have softened considerably large.

Snell said that when he met Cesar, the camel "had never been touched by a human. I had to tame it first. "

Meeting of Caesar

It helped that Snell had some experience in this field. Growing up in a family ranch in New Mexico, Snell recorded a large number of experience in breaking horses. This is probably why he says he backs wonky just 23.

But when Snell was just a kid, he found his greatest challenge. He and his father had gone to a show livestock in southern Texas, which also featured exotic animals for sale. His dad spotted a giant, single hump camels, and fell in love.

He offered to take her home if her son would not it break in. Snell, perhaps a little too confident, accepted the offer. But taming a camel is not too far to tame a horse, Snell said, it is them used to being around people and tolerate a rider.

Soon, Snell decided he wanted a camel of his own. It took some research to find another in the United States, but Snell led to a ranch in North Dakota.Caesar, then 2 years and about the size of a Clydesdale, was one of six camels on the ranch, and spent most of his time out of his own.

Caesar is actually an extremely rare breed. This is a Bactrian camel, whose ancestors roamed the Gobi Desert in Central Asia. There are fewer than 1,000 of them in the wild. The Snell had to go through an authorization process before developing Edwin could start getting to know his new friend.

Caesar is not exactly a social butterfly now, but it is about as placid as a giant animal can get.It will let other people pull or riding between her two huge bumps without complaint, but Snell is the only person who can really take it.

Even-toed and with two humps, Bactrian camels are mammals with brown fur.

Bactrian camels have been domesticated for such a long period of time that we may never know what their original habitats were like. Their two-humped bodies are perfect for desert travel. They have broad feet for walking on sand. Their long eyelashes shield their eyes from sand, and their nostrils close to keep sand out. The humps on their backs actually store energy for when they have a long journey ahead of them. Camels can survive without water for long periods of time and can lose about forty percent of their body weight in water. (Other animals can only safely lose twenty percent.) Camels can also drink salty water and have been known to drink one third of their body weight in ten minutes! The thick fur on their head and hump shed annually. Camels roam in female herds accompanied by one adult male. Other males live alone or in bachelor groups.

Fun Facts: The camel can reach speeds of forty miles per hour when running.
