Her District 27 logo is tops
Erin Barrick, who loves to create craft projects, was intrigued when she heard from her teacher that her school district was asking students to enter a contest to design a new logo for the district.Erin, 8, the daughter of John and Heather Barrick of Lincoln, will be going into fourth grade at Washington-Monroe Elementary School in the fall. She created a design that judges said best represented the elementary school district and Lincoln. This was the first time she had attempted to do something of this nature but she also thought it was fun.
“I started with the crayon and thought about Abraham Lincoln and then it all fell into place,” said Erin. Her design resembles a slice of watermelon with the words “District 27” incorporated into the design.
Her mother, Heather Barrick said her daughter has always had a talent with creating arts and crafts.
“We have a drawer and a cabinet in our house that is filled with a variety of art and crafts supplies. Fabric, paint anything that can be turned into art it’s there,” said Heather Barrick. Heather, who works at Caterpillar Inc. in Decatur.
She said she was surprised when her daughter created a utility truck that her daughter had seen at her mother’s work.
“It’s made of paper and toilet paper rolls. I think it’s pretty inventive that she created this with items in our craft drawer,” said Heather Barrick.
Erin’s father, John who works at Barrick Enterprises in Lincoln, saidErin’s art has spilled over into the shop.
“We’ve got a dry erase board at the shop that is used for the (truck) dispatch. In one area, she’s drawn turtles, penguins and trucks. The guys have written around her work because they don’t want to erase it,” said John Barrick.
District 27 Superintendent Dr. Mary Ahillen said a group of teachers, administrators, community members and parents had expressed their concerns about the district lacking an icon, which would immediately identify who they were.
“The feedback from the District Leadership Team was that the district needed an identifiable logo,” said Ahillen.
According to Ahillen the team, along with a district art teacher narrowed the submissions. “The three top logos were sent to the teachers who voted. The district will use the design on correspondence, signage, the website, etc.,” said Ahillen.
