Liberty County alligator gets death penalty for pet slayings
A San Jacinto County family had to say, “See you later, alligator” to a reptile that had been living on the family farm for 10 years.
Ray Daugherty, a resident of Blue Wolf Ranch on Coley Creek in Shepherd, said the gator was considered part of the family until it began to turn on the other family pets.
“I caught him red-handed this time,” said Daugherty, explaining that he saw the alligator consuming a neighbor’s dog.
“A week earlier one of my German shepherds had come up missing,” he added.
Until this year, the 12-foot, 1,100-pound alligator and the Daugherty family had co-existed with no problems, but the recent drought has dried up the creek, forcing the alligator to seek sanctuary in a stock pond, where the dogs go to cool off on hot summer days.
Feeling that the alligator was becoming a threat, Daughterty called for assistance from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which sent in an animal control contractor to kill and remove the reptile.
Photos are the only mementos of the alligator since the family was not allowed by TPWD to keep any of his remains.
Earlier this year, Daugherty’s daughter, Rachael, won an FFA photo contest featuring the alligator in a photo titled “Backyard Gator.”
