Camp Jubilee: A wooded retreat wipes worries away for kids

Alexis and Edward "Junior" Hicks are siblings living away from the rescue mission ministries for women and children to Roanoke. Caleb, Eden, Sean and Nick are staying there, too.
But the six young people have spent much of this week out in rural Roanoke County - wooded trails, browsing through an obstacle course and splashing in a stream.
Most children did not talk about the plight of homelessness while distracted by the quiet of a summer day camp at Jubilee Acres, a site owned by Catawba Mountain Christian mission based.
"It gives them a sense of belonging," said Nancy Farthing, a volunteer from the First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke.
Camp coordinator Rhonda McAleer said congregations take turns hosting eight rotations of one week of day camp this summer. Children are bussed to the shelter each morning to craft a rural getaway, spiritual lessons and outdoor activities.
Seven years Alexis said she attended the first year in school "way back in Kill Devil Hills' elementary in North Carolina. Dressed in a bright blue Justin Bieber T-shirt and matching skirt layers, it slipped into the creek bed in a pair of water shoes borrowed.
