Conrad talks with conviction about staying in the black, and out of jail

Conrad Black needs to work on his chakras.

In particular, the erstwhile newspaper owner needs to focus on chakra 7, or Sahasrara, that is, “the centre of connecting to something greater than oneself and expressing wisdom and enlightenment.”

There were tips on doing just that Wednesday, courtesy of unguent maker Aveda, which had set up a massage station at what is meant to be the thought-provoking forum we know in This City as ideacity, or Moses Znaimer’s ideacity.

There were also tiny canapés of duck confit with smoked Gouda and crème fraiche and chives.

There was also Conrad Black. Not live, mind you, but prerecorded in New York City, with the out-on-bail, not-allowed-to-come-home-yet Black billed as one of four speakers corralled into an ideacity speaking pod entitled “Unfinished Business.” In this Black was meant to keep company with financially beleaguered American Apparel founder and promoter of wraithlike-very-young-women-in-underwear, Dov Charney.

Charney, citing a scheduling conflict, cancelled.

Black did not.

The upside: Black looks good. Outfitted in a fresh summer suit and sleek tan loafers, the man has the appearance of someone who could take on the world, an attitude that may come in handy next week as he goes before Judge Amy St. Eve in a Chicago courtroom hoping that the tough, diminutive judge will not send him back to jail to serve out his sentence on what Black calls “the residue of this vast prosecution.”

The downside: Black misread the hip ideacity audience and, instead of sparking the collective imagination, delivered a pulse-slowing, stale-dated dissertation on the collapsed financial state of the American empire.

U.S. Treasury bonds. Budgetary deficits. Money in the trillions of dollars that has been siphoned from one pot into another. Worthless real-estate backed securities. Flaccid credit rating agencies. It was far too creative an audience and far too sunny a day to be moored to a subject that Black has gone on about ad nauseam. There was no spark, no bite, no vim, no vigour.

Was it a plot?

Black did make the point that this dire — though not fatal — state of affairs in the U.S. places Canada, by comparison, in a very sunny light as a country of seriousness and influence. It sounded rather like a wayward boy asking if he could come home now.

May he?

June 24 is Black’s resentencing date. In a post-script to his speech he demoted the outstanding two convictions to the “juridical equivalent of reviewing and approving your own expenses,” which sidesteps the guilty obstruction of justice verdict — the removal of boxes from 10 Toronto St. — which still stands.
