Cady recovers from shocking moment at track

Jim Cady planned to check bolts underneath the race car.

He had conducted the routine prerace inspection for George LaBarbera's race team without incident many times over the past three years. Cady expected nothing different Sunday night at Eriez Speedway.

But Sunday was different.

"It was a shocker," Cady, 61, of Niobe, N.Y., said with a chuckle.

A day after being shocked with high voltage in what has been called a freak accident, Cady still delivered a joke with lightning-quick zing.

Cady figures 220 to 240 volts entered his left hand, surged through his left arm and exited through the right side of his neck while he was placing a jack under the team's car.

The incident left Cady with small burns on the index and middle fingers of his left hand and two exit wounds on his neck below his right ear. He had a black eye, a cut and lumps on his head, which occurred when he twice fell to the ground. Cady also believes he was briefly unconscious.

Cady was transported to UPMC Hamot Medical Center by ambulance Sunday. Later that evening, he was transferred to the burn unit at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was released Tuesday, although he said he felt well enough to leave Monday.

"We were all very scared there for a while," said Dutch Davies, a Warren native and driver of LaBarbera's No. 26 Super Late Model. "I'm just very thankful that he's OK."

LaBarbera, of Sugar Grove, thought a generator used to provide electricity in and around his trailer caused the incident. But on Tuesday, an electrical contractor found a short-circuit in a wall of the trailer.

On Sunday, the generator was connected to the trailer and battery charger, which rested on the car while charging the battery. Electricity surged through the car, although the generator was grounded to the truck.

When Cady attempted to place the jack under the car, "It just connected the current," he said. "I saw the spark and I felt that buzzing feel (you get) from electricity. It was like 100 times worse than that."

Cady attempted to pull away, but tripped over the jack and fell. He stood up, only to fall again. A few feet away, Reuben Schwartz, owner of the No. 71L Super Late Model driven by Corry native Dennis Lunger, heard a call for help from one of Cady's fellow crew members. Then Schwartz heard that crew member scream after touching the car and Cady, who was still holding the jack.

Neighbor Brian McClaughry said Peck was a good man. When rats chewed through the electrical cords running to McClaughry's trailer, Peck let him use his electricity, running cords across the street, until McClaughry could get his wiring fixed.

The RV Doctor: RV Battery Wiring

I have a eight year-old Nash 5th wheeler. I have one completely dead battery in it now. I want to replace it with two, (Group 24), 12-volt batteries. I'm not sure how to hook them up. There is not enough room for two, small 6-volt batteries, as the space is quite small. Can you help me? I love your weekly feature on the RV Travel newsletter every Saturday. S. Stepnowski (no city/state) arallel 12-volt batteries are interconnected by routing a battery cable from the positive post of one battery to the other positive post on the other battery. Same for the negative cable; negative to negative. The positive side of the load is then connected to the positive post of one battery and the negative side of the load is connected to the negative post on the other battery. That’s the best scenario for a two-battery bank. If you are in doubt or do not feel comfortable about a procedure, do not continue.
