Bridgeport Council Passes First Reading of Fire Fee
BRIDGEPORT -- The city of Bridgeport will continue to provide emergency services to people who live outside city limits.Council voted unanimously, Monday night, to pass the first reading of an ordinance that complies with the State Fire Commission and the State Fire Marshal's requirement that Bridgeport provide fire and ambulance service to residents in its first due area.
Councilwoman Melissa Matheny said residents have overwhelmed her office with requests that Bridgeport stay on as the primary provider outside of city limits.
"It's really exciting for me to be part of being able to still provide them those services as we have all this time and I think that the people that live outside of the city limits of Bridgeport that are still within our first due will be very happy," Matheny said.
Council has decided not to act under the authority of the Home Rule Board, but will still be able to collect a fee for service. An application for hardship will be available, officials said.
