Technical professionals need to communicate in writing yet they often find it difficult. Our Pyramid Method of Writing helps technical people visualize a document, and provides a logical structure for the content.
Since 1972, RGI has specialized in teaching technical people to write. All of our instructors come from technical backgrounds which makes them feel comfortable working with technical professionals.
These eight online courses introduce a structured approach to writing, and how to apply that structure to writing business letters, long and short reports, and proposals. A separate course provides instruction on writing and using e-mail effectively, and one course is dedicated to common grammar and style issues. This is a self-paced course with extensive practical exercises and the opportunity to send four assignments to an RGI instructor for feedback. Total instruction time is estimated at 14 hours.

Course 1 - Get to the Point! In this course you will learn how to focus your readers' attention on the most important information, so they know immediately why you are writing and what is expected of them. The course will also introduce you to the pyramid method of writing, which is the most effective way to capture and hold a reader's attention.
Course 2 - Organize the Details In Course 1 you learned how to capture your reader's attention by focusing on the most important information. In Course 2 you will learn how to organize the parts of the pyramid into a writing plan that will present your information clearly, logically and coherently. By using this sequence you will learn how to organize your email messages, letters, and reports so they are clear, concise, and complete.
Course 3 - Effective E-mail Techniques In this course you will learn how to apply the pyramid method to electronic mail. You will also learn some useful techniques for proofreading your messages.
Course 4 - Sharpen Your Language Skills The quality of the words and sentences you use when you write convey an image of you and the organization you represent. This course examines factors that can negatively affect the information you are conveying, and will show you how to correct them so that you develop a sharp, confident, persuasive writing style.

Reading is essential if you want to enrich your writing style. Reading books written by master writers is like learning hands on. It is akin to watching a sculptor work and learning to sculpt from him. It is about learning how he has given shape and form to his raw ideas and imagination. You can profit from studying narrative styles and literary techniques used by these amazing writers. The ease of expression and the beauty with which they spin the yarn of words and thoughts to create beautiful tapestries of stories is awe inspiring.
Most of all, you should enjoy reading. Take in the book without analyzing in the first reading. Just experience the book and the story. First read as purely a reader should and second time read as a writer. If it's a novel, study how the plot is set and write about what appealed to you in the book. Join book clubs and discuss what you felt after reading.
