Man stole $1.4 million check — and billionaire's identity
Moundir Kamil, 41, also known as Fnu Lnu, faces a possible 30 years in prison at his sentencing Dec. 19 after pleading guilty Monday to bank fraud, although his term likely will be less than that based on federal sentencing guidelines.
Kamil, a convicted bank robber who looks nothing like Bren, somehow duped bank employees into believing he was the well-known, 79-year-old billionaire who ranks as Forbes' 64th richest person in the world, with an estimated fortune of $12 billion.
Federal prosecutors say Kamil obtained Bren's Social Security number, date of birth and other personal information to open the account in the land developer's name in February 2010 at an East West Bank branch in Cerritos.
Authorities have not explained how he obtained Bren's tax-refund check.
"Kamil stole the identity of victim Donald Bren," Terence F. O'Rourke, a special agent with the U.S. Secret Service, wrote in an affidavit in support of an Aug. 6, 21010 arrest warrant for Kamil.
Kamil presented East West Bank officials with a fake driver's license in Bren's name but bearing his own photograph, according to a federal indictment. Kamil gave a mailing address in South Los Angeles and listed his occupation as "smoke shop," according to court documents.
Kamil then deposited the U.S. Treasury check made out to Bren in the amount of $1,389,524.61 into four bank accounts, according to the affidavit. The check made out to Bren was for overpayment of quarterly estimated taxes.
Between February and April 2010, Kamil transferred or withdrew about $1.1 million from the phony bank account and transferred it to bank accounts in other names, according to prosecutors.
By the time authorities caught on to the scheme, there was just $200,000 in certificates of deposit and $64,049.58 in cash remaining in the accounts.
Authorities filed a criminal complaint in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles in May 2010, when they had yet to determine Kamil's identity. In August, authorities released photos of a suspect making transactions at the East West Bank branch in Cerritos.
Days later, a guard at Santa Ana's city jail called the U.S. Secret Service to say he recognized Kamil as a former prisoner. In 2006, Kamil was convicted of six bank robberies and sentenced to 30 months in federal prison, according to court documents.
Among those bank robberies were heists in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa in 2003, according to the Orange County Business Journal.
