Mrs. Alexander's School marks 45th anniversary

BEVERLY — The latest entries in Sandy Walor's scrapbook include Jack Leathersich being drafted by the New York Mets, Chris Anderson winning a TV quiz show, and Claire Egan placing flags on veterans' graves.

"Anytime I see a picture of our alumni in the newspaper," Walor said, "I cut them all out."

Walor, the owner and director of Mrs. Alexander's School, has clipped out a lot of pictures over the years. The kindergarten/preschool on Lothrop Street will celebrate its 45th anniversary with an open house on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Walor's clip-and-save mentality reflects the tradition and continuity at the school. She began as a substitute teacher when her son was a student and is now in her 40th year. Many of the teachers have been there 20 or 30 years.

The school's origin traces back to Fran Alexander, who founded it 45 years ago as a single mother raising four children. Alexander went on to become the first female president of the Beverly Board of Alderman (now City Council) and the city's first female state representative. She died last year at age 90.

The school still adheres to many of the traditions begun by Alexander, including a morning "together time" when the whole school gathers for the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of patriotic songs. Alexander's daughter-in-law, Jackie Alexander, and niece, Frances Broderick, are teachers at the school.

"We're very traditional," Walor said. "We teach manners and respect and patriotism."

Even the school building, a stately yellow home with views of the ocean, is steeped in history. It was built in 1869 for Jane Rantoul, the widow of U.S. Sen. Robert Rantoul Jr. of Beverly.
