A 'green gold' rush, but seaweed could prove to be bitter harvest
Its use in Scotland can be traced to the time of St Columba. A poem refers to the monks on Iona collecting dulse as part of their diet. In the mid-18th century, seaweed brought in about, at today's prices, £7m in the Western Isles alone. The report, Mapping the Intertidal Seaweed Resources of the Outer Hebrides, which estimates the volume rockweed accessible, says: "It was generally considered that management of the harvest needs an accepted management system in place that is based on sustainable principles, avoiding over harvesting of particular areas and without undue impact on other species, including brown trout, that may use the seaweed beds as important habitats." A spokesman for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) said: "Due to the interest in possible business opportunities from harvesting and processing seaweed, Scottish Enterprise and HIE commissioned this study to provide developers and interested parties with base information about the volume, geographical spread and regeneration capacity of this potentially valuable natural resource. It says the total amount in the Outer Hebrides is 170,500 tonnes, but only 60,700 tonnes (36 per cent) is accessible â less than 3km (1.8 miles) from landing sites. The report suggests that with more landing sites the harvest could increase to 97,000 tonnes â or 59 per cent of the total. But scientists believe a more sustainable amount would be 15,000 tonnes as areas have to be left for four years for the plants to grow. How To Harvest Weed - News
"What seems a large amount of this particular species of seaweed – 170000 tonnes – comes down to a much smaller figure – 15000 tonnes – when you take into account the accessibility issues and the need to allow the weed to re-grow.

mold and dying leaves near harvest time, slow trich development?
I've been growing for a few years now but everytime its close to harvest my plants seem to suffer from the same thing. Some plants seem to take extremely long to gain any amber trichs, one Easy Ryder I grew a year ago took almost 100 days to flower and all the leaves yellow and died before any trichs turned amber so I harvested at all milky. Besides that the freak plant actually yielded nicely and had pretty dank bud, all my other healthy plants seem to yellow and die rapidly as they reach maturity, several times I've harvested but that has been molding from the INSIDE while its been it's still attached. Also the leaves yellow and die rapidly also molding if i dont pull them off in time leaving me with bare buds. They also get the rust spots as they yellow, die then start molding. I'm not exactly sure whats wrong as I have a fellow medical card holder who handles part of the grow and acts as my caregiver. The bud is definitely on par with most dispensary medicine but I lose a lot of potential bud to dying leaves and mold. I use a local brand of soil and fox farm nutrients, grandma's molasses and just bought some cal-mag for my next coming up grow.
