Kansas 150th Armed Forces celebration planned for June 4 & 5 at Forbes Field

A weekend of family fun activities in recognition of 150 years of Armed Forces in Kansas is planned at Forbes Field, Topeka, June 4-5. The two-day event will have a strong military flavor and present an opportunity to see a variety of military, aviation and private exhibitions at Forbes Field.

The mission for the weekend is to recognize and celebrate the long and colorful military heritage of the state of Kansas on the occasion of its sesquicentennial anniversary of statehood.

Hours for the event are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to the Guard Museum and most activities is free, but the Combat Air Museum will charge its normal admission. Active military with ID will be admitted free.

Following a Pancake Feed from 7a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday at the National Guard Museum, the opening ceremony will be held at the Guard Museum's Patriot Field at 10 a.m. Skydivers from SkyDive Kansas are expected to participate in this ceremony and make other jumps during the day. This will be followed by a World War II battle reenactment. A short Grand Parade with old and new military equipment and local dignitaries will begin at the Forbes Terminal at 11 a.m.

Displays of military, civilian, and experimental aircraft will be at the Combat Air Museum and displays of Army equipment, both old and new, at the National Guard Museum. The National Guard Recruiting Command will provide a variety of inflatable and military equipment, also at the Guard Museum.

The Great Plains Balloon Club will stand up hot air balloons between the two museums throughout the day on Saturday and radio-controlled and control line model airplanes will fly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Combat Air Museum.

A Custom/Classic Car Show will be held in the parking lot across from the Combat Air Museum on Saturday, and an Antique Car Show on Sunday. Prizes and awards will be sponsored by Briggs Dodge in Topeka.

Bands scheduled to perform include Just Friends and Fire House Entertainment at the Combat Air Museum and the Topeka Big Band, Marshall’s Band, and Kaw Valley Cornet Band at the National Guard Museum. The Topeka High School Drum Line will perform at the Combat Air Museum at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Other events and activities include Civil War re-enactors and demonstrations; World War II vehicle displays and reenactments; demonstrations by the Kaw Valley Amateur Radio Club; rocket building and launching by Kansas STARBASE; displays by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the Association of the U. S. Army; and firefighting demonstrations by the Metropolitan Transit Airport Authority and 190th Air Refueling Wing fire departments.

Festival of Flight Hearkens to an Earlier Time

The highlight of the show will be the flight of the P-51 Mustang, a single flyer plane characterized by a snarling, jagged-toothed bird painted on its nose. One of the great "war birds," the P-51 Mustang is credited with helping the Allies win WWII.

The two museums will have several special displays, including the TV-series M*ASH tent at the Guard Museum and a P-51, a Lifestar helicopter, and aircraft from the Commemorative Air Force from Wichita at the Combat Air Museum.

Flybys begin at 9:30 am, and include sky divers and a field of planes: P-51 Mustang, Army Lakota, War Birds, T-6 Texan, Cobra Helicopter, T-33 Shooting Star, F-86 Sabre Jet and much more. Aircraft also will be landing at the airport for public viewing.
