2011 BONE Award creates a platform for young designers in Taiwan
It has been six years since the Bone Collection brand offering innovative 3C gadgets such as Iphone holders or mini speakers joined the global market to compete with other well-known brands in the fashion and creative design industry. Reads Lin, the designer and founder of the brand, has successfully promoted his ideas and creativity to more than 50 cities in countries around the world. Hoping to provide a platform for students in design and the arts in Taiwan to show off their creative talents, Lin organized the BONE Awards.The size of the prize may not be too impressive if it won the gold medal left with NT $ 100,000. "International buyers into the stereotype of being Taiwan's economic strength as ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) and OEM (original equipment manufacturer)," says Lin. "Indeed, only a few Taiwanese 3C brands like Acer, Asus and HTC, are well known in the global marketplace."
Shallow market in the affairs of Taiwan industrial design that motivates these businessmen compete with other brands. For Lin, it took six years to have the BONE brand successfully introduced and accepted in 50 other countries.
“Actually, I was a troublesome student during my teenage years, almost expelled from school. At that time I found Taiwan’s industry had the competitive manufacturing skills to provide OEM or ODM services for many international brands, yet I saw very few brands of our own,” says Lin in sharing what inspired his idea to create a brand.
Thus Lin decided to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in industrial design. He further established his own studio to produce and market his own MP3 player when he finished his undergraduate studies. Unfortunately, his product was overwhelmed by the popular and fashionable Ipod, and his business ended up losing NT$4 million.
But he soon realized the huge business potential in Apple product accessories. The story is a bit funny though. “At that time I had too many mp3 plastic protective cases and sold them all very soon via the Internet,” Lin said.
So he decided to design and produce the accessories for Ipod products under the BONE brand name. But the market in Taiwan is too shallow for him to survive in this business. “Then we introduced BONE at several international exhibitions such as MAC World Expo, CeBIT and CES.
