Fort Myers Beach pier restoration
The fishing pier on Fort Myers Beach is undoubtedly an important landmark for the area but to keep it looking like the face of a post card. Lee County is spending nearly a million dollars.. and some tax payers are fired up.
The Lee County commissioners gave their stamp of approval Tuesday morning to begin a restoration project on the pier.
"You wouldn't want to be Lee County, Florida, and not have the beach pier so it really is a priority and this is going to be money very well spent," said commission chairman Frank Mann.
The work on the pier comes with a price tag of $864,000.
"That's just mind blowing to think that the county would have that kind of money or the city or even the state would have that kind of money to make a costly renovation," said Fort Myers Beach resident Dennis Clukey.
Most of the work will be done to the beams that support the pier.. but the railings, planks and brackets will also be renovated.
Some residents say its unnecessary.
"I think the money could be put to better use there are a lot of people down here that are really hurting financially," said beach resident Lynn Thaley.
But there is some good news. The restoration was approved with an agreement that all sub-contractors must be local.
The project manager tells WINK news that same restorations with the same price tag will likely need to be done every five years.
"It's something that we the county are going to have to maintain forever for the benefit of both our tourists and our residents," Mann continued.
"The restoration work is expected to get started in the next couple of weeks and should be complete within five months.
