Infant Foster-to-adopt in NC - Adoption.com Forums

So, we have filled out agency and homestudy applications. And we are waiting for our preferred consultant with an adoption consulting agency to have an opening before we hand in our application and pay our $$. All set to hop on the private, domestic adoption bandwagon. Then my mom tells me about one of her students parents who has explained to her that foster-to-adopt is the way to go, especially with the kind of adoption we are looking at doing (special needs). She explained that it is harder in alot of ways, but it can also go really smoothly and seem almost like a private adoption in some cases. And it is much cheaper. I totally have a heart for safehaven babies and I am completely open to foster-to-adopt from the information I know, but I do feel terrible uninformed and have no idea what to expect or who to call to get more educated. We want and are open to special needs kids, but we don't want to disrupt the birth order of our family and would really like an infant. We also would love to only have an infant that has a pretty good chance of not being placed back with birthparents for attachment purposes (both for DH and I and for our other children). So... does this ever happen in the foster care system in NC? And after all of the training and certification, can you be that specific in what child you're willing to foster? infants that are adoptable are very rare in foster care. when they go into care, the goal almost always is to reunify with their parents. if you are wanting an infant you will probably have to be willing to foster first, knowing its very likely they could go home to their biological family. if they decide not to return the baby to parents, they will look into relatives and if no one steps up then foster family has first opportunity to adopt. if foster family doesn't want to adopt then they will look for a fost/adopt home. it usually takes at least 6 months to change the goal, but it can take a year or longer and even after a year their is no guarantee you'll be able to adopt, they still may go back to their family after a year. that being said, it all depends on the area.
