Don VanDine of Belmont couldn't have been happier Wednesday with his comfy seat in the brand new reserved seating section at the top of Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park's remodeled outdoor amphitheater.
“They've done a great job with the redesign,” VanDine said, raving about his unobstructed, bird's eye view of the stage. “And nobody's talking behind me.”
Jon and Kathy Helder of Holland, however, were much less excited about where they ended up after getting stuck in a long line to have their folding chairs measured (to make sure they weren't too tall) before they could enter the amphitheater.
Their spot near the new “Lying Man” sculpture, far to the left of the stage, seemed less than ideal.
“It almost seems like there's less seating,” Jon Helder said of the amphitheater which now holds 1,900 people compared to 1,750 last year. “I don't see any improvement.”
The $2.5 million amphitheater renovation drew widely mixed reviews Wednesday night, but Huey Lewis & the News gave his fans plenty of reasons to celebrate the opening night of Meijer Gardens' 2011 summer concert series – at least, when he played his biggest hits.
The early part of the show, devoted to the band's tasty covers of old Stax Records R&B songs from its 2010 “Soulsville” album, earned polite applause from the sold-out crowd.
At times, it almost seemed like Lewis was performing in front of a giant oil painting of a reserved Meijer Gardens crowd as he implored them to dance and clap along.
But when Lewis launched into his 1983 Top 10 hit “Heart and Soul” about 50 minutes into his set, he didn't have to ask for help: The audience jumped to its feet and never sat back down.

With a veteran 10-piece band that expertly balances a smidgen of improvisation and instrumental solos on covers of “Respect Yourself” and “Little Sally Walker” with a cappella tunes and tight renditions of its own Top 40 hits, Lewis can pull off a surprisingly diverse mix of material.
Lewis had told me earlier that fans who've followed him over the years “understand that. They're the ones that know all those facets of us. We don't stretch everything out, we still play songs. We're not a jam band.

A long ignored median at Fair Park Blvd and 12th Street has received a facelift and will now be an important reflection of the revitalization that is ongoing in this area of Little Rock. Today, May 5th at 10:00 a.m. a new sign that has been placed on the median was unveiled. This was the culmination of months of planning and hard work.
The Fair Park Residents Association teamed up with the Little Rock Parks Department, UALR, Keep Little Rock Beautiful and Methodist Family Health to landscape the median island with groundcover and install the new sign that will greet drivers and pedestrians as they enter this neighborhood.
“This is all a part of a greater effort to build a stronger, vibrant and more connected neighborhood in this part of our community,” said Fair Park Residents Association's President Joe Busby. “Working with the City of Little Rock is a prime example of the value and impact of volunteer engagement, community building and organizing particularly during tough economic times.”
The 12th Street Corridor has a Master Plan in place for its renewal, which includes a new LRPD Sub Station that will be a part of a mixed use facility.
“New sidewalks and traffic flow patterns are a part of the vision for the future of this area,” said Ward 2 City Director Ken Richardson. “We're excited that the Fair Park Neighborhood Association is partnering with the City of Little Rock to continue to generate an upward swing for 12th Street.”
“We have been focusing on improving medians for years now,” said Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola. “In 2009 we partnered with Heifer International to improve the median at Cumberland Avenue. I would like to thank Keep Little Rock Beautiful for working with all of our City departments to implement this vision and making it a success.
