Jeff & Jer Showgram - San Diego Magazine - April 2011 - San Diego ...

San Diego Magazine: What hobbies or new skills did you pick up during your 17 months off?

Jeff: If I had known it would be that long, I would have my master’s by now, or a marketable trade, or a basic command of Mandarin Chinese. But we didn’t know month-to-month when we would get back on, so my one accomplishment was getting my tattoo fixed.

SDM: Jeff and Jer, how did you two meet? No, seriously.

Jerry: I was in Detroit doing a show with a guy who, after a couple of years, went into management. I was hired by another station but had no partner. I am awful on the air by myself, so the search for a partner was on. I must have met 50 radio guys, and it never came close. Jeff was working in Phoenix. He came to Detroit for a meeting, and the instant we met, it was love. We hung out all weekend and never even talked about radio.

SDM: What time do you go to bed, and what time do you wake up?

Jeff: I get up at 4:15 on the mornings I have to pack the kids’ lunches, otherwise 4:45. It shouldn’t take 30 minutes to pack a couple of lunches. I need an efficiency expert to come in and observe me or something.

SDM: Would you rather lose your voice or lose a finger?

Tommy: I have an insurance policy on my voice, so that might not be a bad thing financially at this moment in my life.

SDM: Do you have any preshow rituals?

Jerry: Some mornings we bite the head off a Barbie doll and dance around a fire ring in the parking lot. And I never drink goat-lip tea. Otherwise, we just show up, say “hi” to each other, and go on the radio. Have you heard this show? Does it sound prepared at all? \

SDM: Do you ever wish the other person would shut up for a sec?

Jeff: Four hours is a lot of material to come up with every day. I ask every question I can think of to make their segments longer and mine shorter.

SDM: Have you been recognized by your voices in public?

Randy: Every once in a while, Debbie and I will be at the store, and I’ll laugh at something she said. Someone will recognize my laugh. I’ve been with the show for almost 18 years now, and I’m still flattered and surprised by that.
