WAC adds Seattle as non-football member

The Western Athletic Conference has added Seattle University as a non-football member, announcing Tuesday that the school will join the conference on July 1, 2012.</p><p>Seattle's addition give the WAC nine full-time member schools, but only seven in football.</p><p>Commissioner Karl Benson said the conference was looking forward to a "beneficial and successful relationship."</p><p>"Seattle's tradition and history along with a strong commitment to academics, its athletics program and their facilities make the university and its top-15 media market a great fit for the WAC," he said in a statement after the conclusion of a board of directors meeting in Park City.</p><p>The other eight conference schools in 2012-13 will be Denver, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio and Utah State. Denver is a non-football member.</p><p>The conference's top football team, Boise State, is leaving to join the Mountain West Conference beginning July 1.</p><p>Current members Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada are bolting next year, when Seattle, Denver and Texas San-Antonio will join.</p><p>Seattle president Stephen Sundborg, S.J., said the school's membership in the WAC will help it move closer to building championship programs, especially in basketball.</p><p>"The WAC has provided some of the nation's best intercollegiate competition for nearly a half-century," Sundborg said in a statement. "By taking this step, we are providing our fans outstanding rivalries, and we give our teams a direct path to conference championships and NCAA Division I postseason competition."</p><p>Two sports sponsored by Seattle but not the WAC -- men's soccer and men's swimming -- will remain in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while all other programs will stay in their current conferences until making the jump next year.</p><p>Currently in the midst of a reclassification process, Seattle will not have full Division I membership until the 2012-13 season.

Giant sinkhole discovered outside Denver City - KCBD, NewsChannel ...

DENVER CITY, TX (KCBD) - A giant sinkhole has been discovered just outside of Denver City, Texas.

According to Occidental Permian Ltd., at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27th, the sinkhole was discovered 2 miles northeast of Denver City, on Occidental property.

An independent fire and safety company is on location and the area is secured. Wells in the area have been shut-in as a precaution.

The sinkhole is approximately 70 yards long, 67 yards wide and 16 yards deep.

Occidental personnel reports that there are no injuries to employees, and no injuries or other impacts outside the immediate vicinity around the hole.

Oxy has notified the appropriate local and state authorities, and will continue to cooperate fully with them.
