Plenty to consider when dealing with exteriors
Exterior finish materials are like an overcoat for your home. They need to be durable enough to help keep the weather out, yet still look attractive.
Whether it's brick or stucco, vinyl, aluminum or wood siding, exterior finishes need proper care and maintenance to keep them looking and functioning well.
Although temperature changes and sunlight exposure can affect exterior finishes, water is the source of many common problems.
For example, moisture can penetrate the wall due to flawed roof elements, faulty or missing flashings and gaps in caulked joints or through cracks and joints in the siding material itself.
Check for tell-tale signs of moisture problems such as water stains or moss under the lip of overlapping pieces of metal siding, or efflorescence (a white, chalky stain) on bricks. Bubbled or flaking painted surfaces may be another sign of moisture problems.
A homeowner with good fix-it skills may be able to repair many common problems including: fixing dents or cracks, removing and re-applying pieces of damaged siding and sealing small cracks.
However, it's best to hire a professional masonry contractor to clean, re-point or replace bricks, a stucco contractor to repair areas of stucco damage and properly equipped contractors when the siding is in high or inaccessible locations.
Care and repair
Whether it's wood, metal or vinyl siding, a good cleaning will help to prolong the life of the product and keep your home looking well cared for.
To clean siding, lightly scrub any obviously dirty areas first, using a long-handled brush and a mild, non-abrasive detergent.
Then, hose the siding gently.
Do not use a high-pressure water spray, as this may force water through the joints and openings in the siding where it may cause damage.
Correctly installed, siding should be able to accommodate the expansion and contraction associated with changing temperatures without deforming, gaping or buckling.
However, cracks, discolouration, swelling or other signs of premature deterioration could mean that water is getting in somewhere.
Check the caulking around doors and windows and the surrounding siding. Also, inspect flashings around chimneys, vents and elsewhere and repair or replace them as necessary.
You can repair metal siding dents with autobody filler, and cracks in vinyl siding can be filled with a colour-matched caulking. You can also simply remove and replace a damaged piece of siding.

Los Angeles, CA – June 14, 2011 – This week, Los Angeles band, Pullman Standard, has announced that they will be touring along beach side locations down the west coast and will be releasing a new album. They kicked off the summer tour with several performances during the “Vintage Cinema” themed gifting lounge for the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, catching the eye of many celebrities like Chaka Khan, Niecy Nash, and AnnaLynne McCord. Their first single from the album will be “Just Like Me (La La La La)”, which has garnered thousands of views on YouTube and will be available on iTunes this summer.
Pullman Standard is a four-piece burlesque power rock band from Southern California that originated as an acoustic act by founder Timothy Daniels in the summer of 2007. Over the years he began adding members to the group starting with drummer Dale Peters, than bassist Austin Smith and finally guitarist/pianist Kevin Wolfe. The band is known for their newsies image and hand made vintage props on stage, including an old- school gas street lamp, carnival lights, and wooden painted signs.
Their current EP Midnight Matinee, pulls in many influences across the board from Panic! at the Disco, The Smiths and The Doors. An equilibrium of both modern power pop with the essence of classic raw garage sounds. "We have a serious, undying passion for music and fans of music. We love what we do and are motivated by what is RIGHT in our hearts, we are artists and music is our canvas.”
