NASA program teaches space science that's fun

April Ghionzoli is having a great time this week teaching students how to make Mars rovers out of Legos.

They even have little battery packs for power.

The third-grade teacher at Hudson Elementary was one of more than 25 teachers from Brownsville who spent three days last week training to teach a five-day summer camp about science. That summer camp is taking place this week at 12 schools throughout Brownsville; schools in other parts of the Valley are also participating in the program presented by NASA and titled, “Summer of Innovation: Imagine Now...to Innovate for the Future.” The camp is free to the students, who are also getting a free breakfast and lunch.

Participating teachers met in Pharr to prepare to teach the camp. Each teacher prepared to teach one of four subjects: rocketry, engineering, astronomy and space science. Two teachers from each school in the Brownsville Independent School District were chosen to participate. Ghionzoli and fellow teacher Daniel Fernandez were chosen from Hudson Elementary. Ghionzoli was chosen to teach engineering at her school, while Fernandez is teaching astronomy.

Ghionzoli said she was honored to be chosen, and she was having a great time last week learning the material.

“We had to design a structure as if the space craft was going to land on Mars,” she said. “We had to use like a Styrofoam cup and little marshmallows and different materials to see if the astronauts inside the cup wouldn’t bounce out when we dropped them from a second floor. We had to design it in a way so that it would withstand the impact when it landed on the ground.”

Al Wright, a science lab teacher at Morningside Elementary, is teaching astronomy at his school. His subject matter deals with the solar system, distances and sizes of the planets, phases of the moon, why only one side of the moon is visible, and how craters form on planets.

Wright has plenty of hands-on activities planned to keep his students interested.

“We’ll be making craters with materials using a base of packed flour and dropping different things in it,” he said. “Also we’ll use craters to show how craters can tell the age of a surface.”

Wright said the children participating in the camp aren’t being tested or quizzed on the material. It’s simply a fun opportunity to learn something new. He said he’s especially pleased with the craft that he will use to teach students about the phases of the moon. The students will pull apart an Oreo cookie. Using the frosting to represent the moon, students will remove more and more slivers of the frosting to show the moon’s phases.
