Seattle's Garrett Fisher presents a techno 'Psyche'

Has Garrett Fisher been hanging out at discos lately?

The question comes up because certain portions of "Psyche," his Web opera, have a pulsing electronica feel to them that's in marked contrast to the Seattle composer's usual acoustic settings. Some bits make you want to hit the dance floor!

"Psyche," Fisher's adaptation of C.S. Lewis' "Till We Have Faces" (based on the Greek myth), was initially a live production presented by the Fisher Ensemble in 2008. Over the last several weeks, video segments of this new recorded version have been posted on www.fisherensemble.org . They'll be screened in their entirety at Jack Straw Productions on Friday.

The visuals by Ryan K. Adams, Ian Lucero, Luke Sieczek and Jacob Snyder incorporate footage of choreography by Christy Fisher, performed by three dancers. This techno-"Psyche" is also new on CD from Fisher's label, 16 Visions ( www.16visions.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- Randy Fisher -- the former city police officer whose secretly recorded conversations shook up the public safety department -- has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against North Myrtle Beach, alleging that he was forced to resign in 2009 because he was critical of his bosses and the city’s response to a wildfire that destroyed dozens of homes in Barefoot Resort.

The lawsuit names the city and Steve Thomas, the assistant city manager, as defendants along with John Smithson, the former city manager, and William Bailey, the city’s former public safety director.

Fisher is asking for an unspecified monetary judgment that would include lost wages and benefits, punitive damages and attorney’s fees. No trial date has been scheduled.

Judge to review dashcam tape involving fired North Myrtle Beach police officer, state legislator's wife

An Horry County judge said Thursday that he will review a dashcam video shot by a North Myrtle Beach police officer of an altercation involving the wife of a state legislator before ruling whether it should be released to the public under the Freedom of Information Act.

Fisher -- now a police lieutenant with the Atlantic Beach Police Department -- and Smithson did not respond to a request for comments. Fisher’s lawyer, Bonnie Hunt of North Charleston, was out of the office Monday and could not be reached for comment.

City spokesman Pat Dowling said the city has not been served with Fisher’s lawsuit, which was filed Monday afternoon. Dowling said it is city policy not to comment on legal matters.

Bailey said he has not been served with the lawsuit but had no role in Fisher’s termination.

“That was decided over at City Hall by John Smithson,” Bailey said. “Any decision to terminate was done by the city manager.”

Fisher says in the lawsuit that Thomas failed to address concerns he raised during a June 2009 meeting in which Fisher complained about perceived mistreatment of public safety employees, including discrimination against female officers. Fisher followed up with an August 2009 letter to Thomas which outlined many of the same complaints.
